    • Many studies have shown that eating garlic can provide a wide variety of health benefits.   • Can Garlic Help Prevent Colds and The Flu?
    • Garlic has shown promising results for preventing colds and the flu. Several studies have shown that garlic reduces the risk of becoming sick in the first place, as well as how long you stay sick. It can also reduce the severity of symptoms.

      STUDY 1
      Garlic is effective in preventing common colds and flu. This study gave 146 healthy volunteers either garlic supplements or a placebo for three months. The garlic group had a 63% lower risk of getting a cold, and their colds were also 70% shorter. They are less likely to be re-infected by almost 7 times.

      Study: Preventing the common cold with a garlic supplement: a double-blind, placebo-controlled survey.

      Participants: 146, 63/grp (matched sex, age & garlic consumption)
      Objectives: Determine the effect of consuming 2.56 g AGE daily.

      They used a five-point scale to assess their health and recorded any common cold infections and symptoms in a daily diary. (5 = well, no problems; 4 = quite well with occasional sneeze, not disruptive to normal routine; 3 = can feel a cold coming on, some minor symptoms; 2 = feeling low and beginning to exhibit symptoms; 1 = full cold symptoms [headache, sneezing, runny nose, tiredness]). If a cold occurred, volunteers noted the number and variety of symptoms, the day recovery began, and the day they felt completely better.


      1. Fewer colds reported in the treatment group:

      Treatment group (TG): 24 people
      Placebo group PG: 65 people (P < .001).


      2. Faster recovery in TG:

      TG: 4.63 days
      PG: 5.63 days

      3. Shorter duration of symptoms (P < .001).

      Volunteers in the treatment group were less likely to get a cold and recovered faster if infected. The garlic group had a 63% lower risk of getting a cold, and their colds were also 70% shorter. Volunteers taking placebo were about 7x more likely to have more than one cold over the 3 months period.

      The study demonstrated accelerated relief, reduction in the severity of troublesome symptoms such as sneezing, cough and runny nose, and recovery to full fitness. A reduced likelihood of becoming re-infected with other viral strains indicated general improvement in the immune system with the garlic supplement.

      STUDY 2

      Black garlic reduces severity in common cold and flu. This study found that colds were on average 61% shorter for subjects who ate aged garlic extract compared to a placebo group. Their colds were also less severe.

      After 90 d of AGE/placebo supplementation, the diaries were collected were analyzed. With 55% of the placebo group and 45% of the AGE group reporting illnesses, no significant difference in the incidence of colds and flu was seen between the groups (Figure 2A). Participants who consumed AGE appeared to have a reduction in the severity of their illness, as noted by a reduction in the number of symptoms reported (Figure 2B), and a reduction in the number of days they functioned sub-optimally and/or missed work or school due to illness (Figure 2C). These results suggest that, although not helping to prevent an illness, the addition of AGE to the diet could be useful in reducing illness severity.


      After 90 d, although the number of illnesses was not significantly different, the AGE group showed reduced cold and flu severity, with a reduction in the number of symptoms, the number of days participants functioned sub-optimally, and the number of work/school days missed. These results suggest that AGE supplementation may enhance immune cell function and may be partly responsible for the reduced severity of colds and flu reported. The results also suggest that the immune system functions well with AGE supplementation, perhaps with less accompanying inflammation.

      1. Most brands do not state the potency or standardization to SAC, though all claim it contains SAC.  All indicates how many cloves are equivalent to 1 capsule. Things to note:
        1. ^ to compare apple to apple. Must quantifying its active ingredient SAC, other antioxidants or enzymes either not as crucial or difficult to detect.
        2. * more cloves do not infer higher potency. The amount of S-allyl Cysteine (SAC) present in 1 clove depends on its aging technology, the species, the weight, etc. E.g.: An over the stretch aging process, results in lower SAC.

  • Nutrition Facts
      Recogen® contains 100% Bioactive Collagen Peptides (BCP), obtained direct from Germany .

      Recogen® is pure protein and thus free of fat & carbohydrates. Recogen® contains no chemical preservative and is soluble in cold liquids.

      Its amino acid composition

      The Bioactive Collagen Peptides (BCP) in Recogen® is developed using  patent technology - U.S. patent 4,804,745. Its amino acid composition is similar to the collagen found in human cartilage. By taking BCP, it will help to regenerate the growth of Type II Collagen.

      In general there are 21 different types of collagen. Type II Collagen occurs almost exclusively in cartilage tissue. Native collagen and BCP differ in their amino acid composition. The biggest difference is in glycine and proline; in BCP, these are 3 times as high as in other protein. See amino acid comp graph below.


      It is also interesting to compare the absolute amounts of amino acids in BCP and other protein-rich food. Based on grams of amino acid per 100g of BCP and food respectively the following ratios have bee established See graph on amino acid content below.

      The table shows to obtain the same amount of glycine in 10g of Recogen®, you will need to take:

      2.9L of milk or
      164 g of pork

      For the same amount of proline, you will need:

      1.2kg of potatoes
      140g of wheat bread

      This comparison confirms that BCP provides the required amounts of the most important amino acids for the cartilage metabolism much more effectively and more selectively than any other protein containing food.

      Extremely low molecular weight

      BCP has an extremely low molecular weight of 3 to 6 kDaltons. Compared to normal gelatine with a molecular weight of around 100 kdaltons, it is easily absorbed into the blood stream

      Recogen® and its biological Value

      It is confirmed that Recogen® differs in its amino acid composition from other natural protein rich food. The graph below shows a comparison between Recogen® and the average occurrence of amino acid in natural protein-rich food. The natural protein-rich food refers to gelatine, milk Meat, potato, bread etc. The biggest differences are in glycine and proline; in BCP, these are 3 times as high as in other proteins.

      However, it is not only the percentages but also the absolute amounts of amino acids in gelatine and other protein-rich food that are interesting and stand much in favor for BCP. Based on grams of amino acid per 10g of Recogen® and food respectively, the following ratios have been established as below.

      The table shows that the consumption of About 2.8L of milk or 1.8kg of potatoes would be required to take in the same amount of glycine that is contained in 10g of Recogen®. The proline content in 10g of Recogen® is equivalent to 110g of meat, 1.2kg of potatoes or 140g of wheat bread.

      Moreover Hydroxyproline which is particularly important for the selective collagen synthesis can only be detected in substaincial amounts in Recogen®.

  • Scientific Evidence
    • Latest osteoarthritis research findings: Objective visual evidence that Recogen® promotes the regeneration of cartilage tissue.

      This has been confirmed by the results of two independent investigations which were presented in September 2009 at the congress of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) in Montreal.  

      A clinical trial performed by Harvard Medical School and Tufts Medical Center demonstrated the efficacy of Recogen® on the basis of magnetic resonance images (MRI). Working in collaboration with Kiel University, scientists at the Kiel-based Collagen Research Institute (CRI) then gathered experimental evidence of the effects of consumption of Recogen® on cartilage cells. 

      Using an objective imaging technique, the Tufts researchers, led by Dr Timothy McAlindon, found a significant regeneration of the cartilage tissue in the Recogen® group, compared to normal cartilage degeneration progression in the placebo group. The CRI’s cell experiments indicated that Recogen® induces the increased synthesis of aggrecan (an important component in cartilage) and Type II collagen (which plays a key role in cartilage elasticity).

      The role of Recogen® in the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis
      The administration of Recogen® can prevent joint degeneration and counteract load-induced wear of the articular cartilage. Compared to other substances which focus on providing short-term pain relief, Recogen® tackles the root causes of osteoarthritis and cartilage degeneration. Previous clinical trials had already shown that the substance promotes mobility and reduces pain.

      Since 1980 scientists of different medical disciplines have strengthened their R&D activities in the field of both cartilage metabolism and the effect of Bioactive Collagen Peptides on joint health.       Professor Milan Adam
      The most extensive research was carried out by Prof. Milan Adam, Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Prague , which led to the issue of a European patent, No 0254289 Agents for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

      In his double blind study, (NOTE: A double blind study is a test procedure in which the identity of those receiving the intervention is concealed from both the administrators and the subjects until after the test is completed; designed to reduce or eliminate bias in the results) 82 participants were given either one of the following ingredients over a 16 month period.

      The result was a significant percentage of participants who reduced their need for analgesics after taking Bioactive Collagen Peptides.

      In the 1996 Beuker & Rosenfeld's double blind 6 months study, a significant percentage of the 100 elderly aged 65 years or greater shown improvement in joints mobility upon intake of Bioactive Collagen Peptides compared to those with placebo control.

      Prof. Roland Moskowitz, Director of the Arthritis Research Institute, Cleveland/USA conducted an international study ( USA ; UK ; Germany ) with 390 patients suffering from osteoarthritis.

      In Spring 2003, Dr Steffen Oesser, physiologist at the University of Kiel, Germany published key studies on cartilage metabolism and regeneration; his latest publication (Cell & Tissue Research 311: 393-9; March 2003) demonstrated that Bioactive Collagen Peptides stimulates collagen biosynthesis in Collagen chondrocytes (cartilage cells). The presence of bioactive collagen peptides leads to dose-dependent increase of collagen type II Oesser et al. (Journal of Nutrition 129: 1891-95; 1999) conducted experiments with isolated segments of the intestine which have shown that collagen fragments can pass through the intestinal wall (10-15% of these proteins; in a high molecular form of up to 50kD) and reach the blood stream. Accumulation of radio-labelled bioactive collagen peptides can subsequently be seen in cartilage.

      Study Objective: Testing for efficacy, tolerability / acceptance / adverse effects and fast pain relief. Study was conducted at Regio Kliniken, Germany in 2010.

      Study design: Daily oral application of 5.5g of Recogen® Gold over 12 weeks

      Measurements: WOMAC scores - pain, stiffness, activities and composite (total scores)

      Q: Are there any side effects?
      A: There are no known side effects. Recogen® is safe for long term consumption. Because of its low molecular weight, it is easily absorbed through the intestinal walls without causing stomach irritation. Some clinical studies have reported increased flatulence and diarrhea but such cases are extremely rare and isolated.

      Q: When is the best time to consume Recogen®? In the day or before bedtime?
      A: Generally there is no fixed rule on when is the best time. You can take it any time of the day that is most convenient to you.       Morbus Parkinson is caused by a lack of dopamine without any connection to bioactive collagen peptides. Kidney stones are made of concretions of urine. Recogen® do not contain any uretic proteins that can cause kidney stones. We advise customers who has any existing illnesses to always consult your medical doctor before starting on any types of food supplements.

      Q: I'm taking glucosamine, can I consume Recogen® together with glucosamine?
      A: Yes, you can take them together. However, we do not recommend this as you will not have a clear indication which product has greater efficacy. Usually, we would recommend taking Recogen® by itself over a period of at least 1-3 months and observe the results.
      Q: I'm taking medications for osteoporosis, can I consume Recogen® as well?

    • Q: Which type of collagen is Recogen® made from?  

      A: Recogen® uses bovine hides, which contains Type 1 and Type 3 collagen (5%) which undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain Bioactive Collagen Peptides. 

      Q: Why is it called Bioactive Collagen Peptides?  

      A: It is called a Bioactive Collagen Peptide because it shows effects in our body by stimulating certain cell types like human fibroblasts, osteoblasts / osteoclasts, chondrocytes.

      Q: Collagen Type I, Type II, Nano collagen, what is the difference? 

      A: The type of collagen plays no role when it comes to clinical effects. The difference between type I and type II collagen is negligible (< 1%), but the peptides resulting from the production process do. We describe the activity of the peptides as bioactive due to their capability of stimulating human fibroblasts, osteoblasts / osteoclasts, chondrocytes. Most products use the "types" for marketing purpose.

      Q: Is it true taking hydrolyzed collagen type 2 can stimulate Type 2 collagen in joints area as claimed by some brands?

      A: The collagen types are dependent on the source of raw material, chicken sternum contains type II collagen (Other Brands) and bovine hide contains type I collagen (Recogen®). Both are later treated enzymatically and broken down into peptide form. 

      The difference between type I and type II collagen is negligible (<1%). Once broken down into peptides, the effects highly depend on the right peptides and not if it was derived from type I and type II collagen. Potentially a hydrolyzed type II collagen could stimulate cartilage growth if it has the right composition of peptides. So far, most products claiming to contain Type II collagen do not have profound clinical data supporting them. Most products do not provide peptides that could interact with cells, therefore it is unlikely to show effects in Osteoarthritis. 

      Q: A product that contains undenatured collagen type 2 claims that results can be achieved with a low dosage of 40mg whereas Recogen® required 10,000mg?

      A: The mode of action is different. Such products may address symptoms of Rheumatic Arthritis (RA), a defect in the immune system, Recogen®, on the other hand, contains 10,000mg (10g) of collagen peptides that are effective against the cause of Osteoarthritis (OA) which is the degeneration of cartilage tissue. 

      Q: Recogen is hydrolyzed collagen Type 2 or is it Type 1? 

      A: It is more correct to say Recogen® is obtained from Type I raw material. The type of collagen has no influence on product effectiveness. Once it's broken down to peptides (hydrolyzed), it's not possible to say if the peptides are derived from type I, II or III (also part of the collagen in skin with about 5%). Most brands use collagen types for marketing purpose. We wish to stress that the type of collagen does not affect product effectiveness. Absorption rate and bioavailability are the key factors. 

      Q: What is the difference between Recogen Gold’s rosehip extract versus rosehip powder?

      A: Rosehip extract is not the same as rosehip powder. An extract is always more concentrated. So 0.5g or 1g rosehip extract is not the same as 5g of rosehip powder. There are no comparative studies to compare the powder and the extract, so there are no facts or figures to actually compare them. An extract's effectiveness highly depends on the extract method (whereby the right active components are retained) and raw material source. 

      It is also important to point out that both are different substances and so the difference in the dosage means nothing.

  • What is OA?
    • Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive destruction of joint cartilage and associated structures such as bone, synovial and fibrous joint capsule and the periarticular musculature.

      Cartilage damage always arises from a disparity between the ability on the part of joint cartilage to cope with stress and the actual stress applied. There are 2 basic forms of osteoarthritis: Primary & Secondary.

      Primary . Actual cause unknown. Genetic predisposition, tissue weakness, nutritional anomalies within the bradytrophic joint cartilage and other similar general factors have been considered; however a clear trigger has not yet been identified.

      Secondary . Consequence of previous damage or of another illness. Such as 

      1. Overuse injuries
      2. Post-traumatic change
      3. Inflammatory & age-independent joint disease
      4. Systemic, metabolic and endocrine disorders
      5. Neurological disease
      6. Joint disease during growth phase, including post-traumatic and post infectious disorders of growth
      7. Congenital development disorders and joint deformities
  • The Situation

      In USA , the number of people between the ages of 75 and 85 doubled in the two decades between 1960 and 1980; those over the age of 85 has increased by 140 %. The United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1, 1988 - 94) found that 79 percent of men and 86 percent of women between the ages of 75 and 79 suffered from osteoarthritis of the hand. 

      The Framingham Study - a long-term study conducted by the National Institutes of Health in the USA since 1948 - found evidence of osteoarthritic knee conditions in one third of those studied in the age group 63-94.

      • An English study published in 2001 (Peat et al.) showed that degenerative knee changes resulting in functional impairment occurred in 10 percent of those over 55 years of age. The symptoms and impairments were classified as being severe in one-fourth of these patients.
      • In Singapore , it is estimated that 30% of people over the age of 65 have arthritis, in particular, those of degenerative type.

      Survey revealed that 6% of the adult population has significant joint or muscles aches. Most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which affects about @24,000 Singaporeans. As much as 25% of people with arthritis don't do anything to relieve their symptoms.

      A survey on primary medical care conducted by MOH and NUS in 2001, it was found that arthritic conditions and rheumatism are among the top 5 leading conditions for which treatment was sought in primary private and public medical care clinics in Singapore . They are accounted for 4.8% of the total attendance.

      • Approximately 1 in 25 (4.2%) Singaporean aged 18 years and above are dignasoed with arthritis. Females (5.7%) had a higher prevalence of reported arthritis than males (2.6%).

      ·         Compared to 2001's survey results, for the group aged 18 - 69 years old, the prevalence of reported arthritis's percentage has doubled within these 6 years.



  • The Reason
      • The increased life expectancy is one reason for the rising incidence of osteoarthritis in industrialized countries.

        •  Numerous epidemiological studies conducted since the 1970s have shown that there is a correlation between osteoarthritis and being overweight. In obese people, degenerative joint diseases occur significantly more frequently than in people of the same age of normal weight.

      In Singapore , the 1998 National Health Survey, based on the WHO criteria (normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9; overweight: BMI 25.0-29.9; obese: BMI 30 and above) found that in adults (aged 18 to 69 years), 24.4% were overweight and 6.0% were obese; thus, 30.4% were above the normal weight. There were slightly more obese Singaporean females (6.7%) than Singaporean males (5.3%). The highest proportion of obesity was found in the 50-59 years age group.

      • Lack of exercise
      • Incorrect and excess strain on cartilage: a result of occupational demands, performance sport or postural anomalies.
      • Additional risk factors for primary and secondary osteoarthritis are traumatic injuries, repetitive and severe mechanical stress, abnormal joint positions, neuropathic changes, dysplasia and genetic factors including several hereditary diseases such as hemophilia, hemoglobinopathy or congenital dislocation of the hip.
      • Changes in food consumption patterns. There are also more people going "greens" or eating more lean meat. Thus the collagen in-take from the daily food is insufficient to maintain or increase the synthesis of the cartilage.
      • Lack of collagen in daily food intake. Weight watchers who go greens and those who take only lean meat do not have sufficinet collagen in their body.
  • The Consequence
    • Today, there is still no cure for osteoarthritis. At best, pain can be relieved, related inflammation suppressed and further functional impairment delayed.

      Current treatments for osteoarthritis are physiotherapy,nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and local glucocorticoid crystal injections.

      Surgery is only possible in certain joints and is considered a last resort because of the costs, the stress placed on the patient and the surgical risks involved.

      With the growing number of patients, the progressive causes and the socio-economic impact of the disease, it is reasonable to pursue promising options in the prevention and therapy of osteoarthritis.

      Taking preventive steps before the onset of irreparable degeneration is necessary. However this is difficult in cases where there are no symptoms. It also requires intensive patient motivation, counseling, and education.

      Appropriate preventive measures include lifestyle changes (loss of weight, moderate physical exercise, avoidance of excessive joint strain) and the timely treatment of abnormal joint positions, infections, and other risks.

      Adequate intake of certain nutrients to optimize specific metabolic processes in (blood vessel-free!) cartilaginous tissue is an additional promising approach.

      Medical recommendations for preventive measures must be practical and be adopted by the patient. Unrealistic advice, e.g. drastic behavior change or time consuming and expensive therapies, is likely to fail.

  • Metabolism and Turnover
    • Cartilage consists of cellular building blocks - the chondrocytes - and an extracellular specific matrix, which is of particular physiological significance. The extracellular matrix of the cartilage contains two classes of macromolecules: proteoglycans (such as aggrecan) which are responsible for the compressive strength and elasticity of the tissue and collagen (Type II Collagen fibrils) that provides its tensile and shear strength.

      Cartilage, like bone, is subject to a continuous, slow regenerating process. There are numerous matrix metalloproteases (such as collagenase, stromelysine, aggrecanase), as well as lysosomal proteases (cathepsins), which can degrade all cartilage building blocks at neutral pH.

      According to current understanding, the activity is controlled by the cytokine interleukin-1. A tissue inhibitor of metal metalloproteases and a plasminogen activator inhibitor are antagonists that inhibit the catabolic enzymes, thus slowing down cartilage degradation.

      There are also polypeptide mediators, which, as growth factors, stimulate anabolic metabolic processes in cartilage, thus contributing to cartilage formation to a limited extent. This group of mediators includes the extent. This group of mediators includes the insulin-like growth factor 1 and the transforming growth factor ? both of which stimulate proteoglycan synthesis.
